i-STEAM: Competency through Objective Video Analysis - DoD

Principal Investigator(s):

Nichole Morris, HFSL Director, Mechanical Engineering

Project summary:

The interdisciplinary research team of this project is developing effective training tools to support training for the treatment of female soldiers - and all soldiers irrespective of gender. The study aims to determine countermeasures to combat bias that negatively impacts treatment provided to female soldiers in combat. The human factors approach of this project has been used to understand combat medic and combat lifesaver training, decision making, and biases through medical simulation studies, interviews, and other classic human factors methods such as hierarchical task analyses and usability assessments of training tools. The trained research team has reviewed hundreds of hours of video to flag skill demonstrations and errors to support future development of real-time artificial intelligence evaluations of performance.
